Spiritual influencers: Most Important Controversies still circulating the Internet

In today’s interconnected world, spiritual influencers shape our beliefs and perspectives like never before. From Russia to Nepal to the United States, figures like Alexandr Dugin, Buddha-boy, and Deepak Chopra have captured the imagination of millions. But who are these modern mystics, and what drives their immense popularity?

Did you know that Deepak Chopra’s books have been translated into over 43 languages? (Source: Chopra.com). And if you’ve heard the term “multipolar world” you should know about Alexandr Dugin, the man who invented the term. This global reach underscores the significant impact these spiritual leaders have on our society.

Alexandr Dugin: Spiritual influencer of Russia

Alexandr Dugin, often referred to as “Putin’s brain,” has emerged as a controversial figure in Russian geopolitics and spirituality. His journey from a fringe thinker to an influential voice in Russian politics is nothing short of remarkable. Dugin’s core philosophy, known as the Fourth Political Theory, blends elements of traditionalism, esoteric spirituality, and geopolitical strategy.

He’s all the more important now as Russian propaganda, mostly through the infamous troll factories, uses a lot of core ideas of Dugin’s work to justify the invasion of Ukraine. Controversial takes range from the supremacist position of Russia in the world to his views on how to overtake the world position.

As the map suggest, Dugin’s idea of Russia includes Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, China and Europe. A classic “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars” mindset.

At the heart of Dugin’s ideology lies the concept of Eurasianism, a geopolitical philosophy that envisions Russia as the center of a vast Eurasian empire. This idea draws heavily from traditional Russian mysticism and Orthodox Christian values, creating a unique blend of spiritual and political thought.

Dugin’s esoteric background

In his early days, Dugin was influenced by occultist meetings in the former SSSR. He even translated Evola’s book “Pagan imperialism” which got him expelled from the university.

Alexandr Dugin’s esoteric views consist of a mixture of Traditionalism and Slavic Neo-pagan movements.

  • Firstly, traditionalists believe in a sacred Tradition that once provided a stable, hierarchical order based on transcendent principles, which has been eroded by modernity since the sixteenth century. They view modernity as harmful for disrupting this natural order and seek to reclaim an awareness of a unified “primordial Tradition,” believed to be the essence of all religions.
  • In other words, the “primordial Tradition” is another version of “The Universe”, “The Source”, “God”, depending on the spiritual doctrine. Another core feature is that it’s a response to the overwhelming influence of modern society.
  • Dugin is closely linked to the Russian neo-pagan religious movement Ynglism, which provides a link with the Orthodox church as well as a number of Slavic Indo-european elements. Ynglism refer to themselves as “Old believers”, and seem connected to a Russian Orthodox movement of the same name. Their holy scripture is the Slavo-Aryan Vedas.
  • Ynglism is a modern Slavic neo-pagan religious movement originating in Russia that claims to revive ancient Slavic traditions, rituals, and beliefs centered around the worship of the god Yngly, considered the primordial force of creation. It promotes a combination of esotericism, nationalism, and mythological reinterpretation.
  • Ynglism was promoting racial purity and the superiority of the Slavic race, often portraying Slavs as the direct descendants of ancient gods or a pure “Aryan” lineage. The movement also rejects multiculturalism, advocating for the preservation of Slavic culture and identity in opposition to Westernization.
  • As a study from Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars remarks, for Dugin, “Orthodoxy, and in particular the Old Believers, can incorporate Neo-paganism’s nationalist force, which anchors it in the Russian soil and separates it from the two other Christian confessions”.

These spiritual points are taken to political action. Dugin’s influence extends beyond Russia’s borders, resonating with far-right movements globally. His writings on traditionalism and critique of Western liberalism have found an audience among those seeking alternatives to mainstream political ideologies.

As mentioned, the most famous example is the idea of “multi-polar” world, detailed in his book “The theory of multipolar world“. This idea is an actual topic that finds validity around the globe within ideologies trying to elaborate a need for change of current global socio-economic order. Finding out more about the background of those ideas enables us to be critical and careful when considering it.

Controversies Surrounding Alexandr Dugin

Despite his growing influence, Dugin’s ideas have not escaped controversy. Critics accuse him of promoting fascism and neo-Nazism, pointing to elements of his Fourth Political Theory that seem to echo totalitarian ideologies of the past.

Dugin’s role in the Ukraine conflict has been particularly contentious. His vocal support for Russian intervention in Ukraine led to him being sanctioned by several Western countries. The debate over Dugin’s actual influence on Putin’s regime continues, with some calling him the architect of Russia’s foreign policy while others downplay his importance.

In academic circles, Dugin’s philosophical works face scrutiny. Scholars question the validity of his theories, arguing that they lack rigorous academic foundation. Despite this, his ideas continue to spark debate in both political and spiritual forums.

Buddha-boy: Nepal’s Enigmatic Guru

Halfway across the world, in the lush forests of Nepal, another spiritual phenomenon emerged in the form of Ram Bahadur Bomjon, better known as “Buddha-boy.” Bomjon captured global attention in 2005 when he allegedly meditated for 10 months without food or water, drawing comparisons to Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism.

Of course, much of these comparisons were ended recently when Buddha-boy was sentenced for sexual violence and abuse.

While a lot less influential than Dugin or Chopra, it’s important to notice similarities between their teachings.

This example is important to realize that the East with all its spiritual appeal can just as well have problematic teachers and leaders. We should not romanticize it, but always have a keen awareness of spiritual red flags, even among spiritual influencers

Buddha-boy’s core teachings revolve around the concept of maitri, or loving-kindness. He promotes a blend of Buddhist and Hindu practices, emphasizing meditation and compassion. His Bodhi Shrawan Dharma Sangha organization has attracted followers from around the world, transforming his meditation site in Nepal’s Bara district into a popular pilgrimage destination.

  • The idea is that despite the illusion of separation in the physical world, everything is interconnected at an energetic and spiritual level. It draws on quantum physics to explain that all matter is energy vibrating at different frequencies and highlights the spiritual teaching of “oneness” as a path to greater love, compassion, and wisdom.
  • As proof, the tangible effects of collective meditation on society, the “Maharishi Effect” is used to emphasize unity’s power in both scientific and spiritual contexts.
  • In other words, the “One-ness” is another version of “The Universe”, “The Source”, “God”, depending on the spiritual doctrine. Another core feature is that it’s a response to the overwhelming influence of modern society. Maybe it sounds familiar now….
  • Accumulating karmic merits as part of the Ascension Pathway, where individuals enhance their spiritual progress by performing good deeds, cultivating virtues, and engaging in selfless service. The goal is to ascend to higher spiritual realms, clearing karmic debts along the way.
  • The best way to accumulate good karma is… Reading the holy scriptures from the Guru. This brings you 10/10 good karma, as opposed to Good Deeds benefiting all, which provide 4/10 good karma. Yes, this is the exact reasoning of these teaching, and details can be found on this page.

Controversies Plaguing Buddha-boy’s Legacy

Buddha-boy’s path has reached a halt. Serious allegations of sexual assault and violence against followers have tarnished his image, and he has been sentenced to jail in June 2024.. Several individuals have reportedly disappeared from his ashram, leading to legal troubles with Nepalese authorities. Even if you find his teachings valid to some extent, raping a minor is not something a holy person can do, which, in my eyes, diminishes his accomplishments completely.

The authenticity of his meditation claims has also come under scrutiny. Scientists and skeptics question the possibility of surviving without food or water for such extended periods, casting doubt on the miraculous nature of his feats.

Family disputes have further complicated Buddha-boy’s narrative, with relatives accusing his organization of cult-like behavior. These controversies have had a significant impact on his spiritual movement, dividing followers and raising questions about the nature of modern guru-disciple relationships. From previous experience, we know how dangerous cults can be.

Deepak Chopra: The Mind-Body Wellness Guru

Shifting our focus to the West, we encounter Deepak Chopra, a name synonymous with the mind-body wellness movement. Chopra’s journey from traditional medicine to alternative healing has made him one of the most recognized figures in contemporary spirituality.

Chopra’s philosophy integrates elements of Ayurvedic medicine, quantum physics, and Eastern spirituality. He promotes the idea that consciousness is the foundation of all reality, influencing health, well-being, and even the physical world around us.

The establishment of the Chopra Center and his numerous bestselling books have created a global wellness empire. Chopra’s collaborations with scientific institutions and endorsements from celebrities have further amplified his message, making him a household name in the world of alternative medicine and spirituality.

Deepak Chopra’s Teachings Under the Microscope

Despite his popularity, Chopra’s teachings have faced significant criticism from the scientific community. His claims about quantum healing and the power of consciousness to alter physical reality have been challenged by physicists and medical professionals alike.

Debates rage over the efficacy of Chopra’s alternative medicine practices. While many followers swear by his methods, critics accuse him of promoting pseudoscience and profiting from false hope. Legal disputes have arisen, challenging his medical credentials and the scientific basis of his claims.

Deepak Chopra’s Mind-Body Philosophy: A Bridge Too Far?

Deepak Chopra’s mind-body wellness philosophy has captivated millions worldwide, blending ancient wisdom with quantum concepts

  • At its core, Chopra’s teachings emphasize the interconnectedness of mind and body, the power of consciousness in healing, and the potential for spiritual enlightenment through practices like meditation. His ideas about quantum healing and the law of attraction have gained a massive following. However, critics argue that Chopra’s interpretation of quantum physics lacks scientific rigor, potentially misleading followers about complex health issues
  • While some aspects of mind-body connection are supported by research, skeptics caution against oversimplifying medical treatments or ignoring structural inequalities in favor of positive thinking alone.
  • Deepak Chopra’s philosophy centers on the idea that all life forms are connected through a single, universal consciousness. Drawing from Eastern spiritual traditions, Chopra argues that separations between individuals, species, and even physical objects are merely illusions created by our limited perceptions. He believes that every person is an expression of this greater consciousness, suggesting a profound, underlying unity that connects us all.
  • Law of attraction is another example of this. These ideas are often presented in either developing countries or developed countries, where base needs are often met. You cannot law-of-attract good, honest politicians for example, but sure, with positive thinking you can encourage yourself to find a proper mating partner. Just remember, don’t fall into pit-falls of  victim-blaming (suggesting bad outcomes happen due to insufficient positive thinking).
  • Finally, Chopra is a well established product as well, most recently venturing into the AI market. This is a highly gray area for ethical considerations, as Mindful Leader emphasizes. Spirituality is always reaching the most intimate aspects of our psyche, and often most critical vulnerabilities. Right now, we have no reason to trust the Big Data companies, and I fail to see why Chopra does.

Debates rage over the efficacy of Chopra’s alternative medicine practices. While many followers swear by his methods, critics accuse him of promoting pseudoscience and profiting from false hope. Legal disputes have arisen, challenging his medical credentials and the scientific basis of his claims.

In response to skepticism, Chopra has made efforts to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. He continues to engage with researchers and academics, seeking to validate his theories through scientific studies.

Conclusion: Navigating the Landscape of Modern Spirituality

In this article, we’ve explored how spiritual influencers and gurus from all over the world, namely Alexandr Dugin, Buddha-boy, and Deepak Chopra, play a complex role in our society. Their teachings offer hope and/or guidance to millions.

It’s also important to notice that these people can be really close to the most powerful people in the world. Dugin has allegedly had a major influence on Putin, so you can notice the similarities between him and Rasputin. On the other hand, Chopra is seen discussing spirituality as a business venture with the most prominent Tech leaders in the world.

In that way, regardless of whether you think Slavic people are the supreme race or that you can will into existence the dodo bird, these people have a huge influence on our social reality.

But underlying idea of all three of these Spiritual Influencers is the idea that we are all one, coming from the same source. These ideas respond to societal needs globally, as modernity and current political order has left many people scarred – spiritually, politically, medically, socially. At this point it’s important to question: is this a belief or a well planned strategy to place their product on a global market?

What’s your take on these influential leaders? Do their teachings resonate with you, or do you approach them with caution? Remember, in our quest for meaning and enlightenment, it’s crucial to think critically and explore diverse perspectives. Without the critical approach, spirituality is gone and you’re left with a spiritual hashtag instead of a divine connection.
